BRA Day, or Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, is held internationally every year, and on the 26th November, we ran the first BRA Day evening at St Vincent’s Hospital. Dr Magnusson spoke to patients with, or recovering from breast cancer, on the various reconstruction options that are available, as well as emerging technologies that enhance the reconstruction process, and provide optimal patient outcomes.
Breast reconstruction can be an important step in the recovery process for women who have undergone mastectomy as part of their treatment, and can be undertaken at the time of mastectomy, or after treatment has been finalised, and the patient is free from cancer.
The evening was supported by the local Breast Care Nurses from both St Vincent’s and St Andrew’s Hospitals, and it was wonderful to have General Surgeon, Dr Eric Donaldson, on hand to add further insight to the appropriate time to consider reconstruction. Attendees were able to ask questions, as well as view the various implants that can be used during the reconstruction.
A special thank-you to our own breast reconstruction patients who were available to speak personally of their experience.
